Buses in Cambodia

Traveling by bus in Cambodia

It is the transportation we recommend you to use. The best value for now before the restoration of the rail network. There are many companies that can transport you. No need to find their offices to buy tickets, in the majority of cases, your guesthouse or hotel can sell them to you. In this case a tuk-tuk to take you at the hotel and drive you where the bus waits is included in the price. It's a little more expensive but so convenient. Most buses are air-conditioned and comfortable. With the improvement of roads in Cambodia, it is the safest transportation in Cambodia. Bus companies in Cambodia with the best reputation are Mekong Express and Sorya. Paramount, however, seems less serious.

Minibus

Traveling by minibus and shared taxis in Cambodia

Shared taxis are less comfortable than buses or minibuses but they are an alternative to buses to travel in Cambodia. In general, they are do not go on the main roads and drive on dirt roads. Not very often used by tourists, minibuses are less safe than buses. Their drivers often drive to fast and not very carefully. We advise you, when you have the choice, to take the bus instead of minbuses. They are safer and less crowded. In addition to the collective taxis that leave when they are full and in which you will be tight, there are still a few pick-ups circulating in Cambodia. Installed in the rear you will breathe the dust of dirt roads. Buy a mask or use a scarf to protect you. It is relatively easy to buy surgical masks in Cambodia. You can pay for your place in the pick-up directly to the driver. And don't hesitate to bargain !
Plane

Traveling by plane in Cambodia

By plane in Cambodia, you will not really be have a lot of choice. Only three cities have an operational airport: Phnom Penh, the capital of the country of course, Siem Reap, the city near the Angkor temples and Sihanoukville recently offering flights to and from Siem Reap. The problem with traveling by air in Cambodia is that companies regularly appear and disappear. Today, there is only one airline in Cambodia: Cambodia Angkor Air. It offers flights between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and since recently flights between Sihanoukville and Siem Reap. The rotations are limited so it is better to book your tickets in advance in high season. Cambodia Angkor Air also offers flights between Phnom Penh or Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and from Phnom Penh to Bangkok in Cambodia. Siem Reap is the busiest airport in Cambodia.

Boats en Cambodia

Traveling by boat in Cambodia

An alternative that people often forget when they are traveling in Cambodia is the boat. While the cruise on the Tonle Sap between Battambang and Siem Reap is often advised, there are other possible boat trips. Especially between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. By express boat, it takes 5 hours. Personally we are not fans of speed boats because of their noise and environmental pollution. But know that it is a possibility to connect Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. We recommend the bus for this trip but the boat trip from Battambang to Siem Reap is really something to do. Landscapes are beautifuk. Beware that the more advanced in the dry season (November to March) we are the lower the water levels are and some boat services can be disrupted or less frequent.
Trains in Cambodia

Traveling by train in Cambodia

There is a railway line which connects the South to the North West of Cambodia. It goes from Sihanoukville to Poipet on the Thai border through Kampot, Takeao, Phnom Penh, Pursat, Battambang and Sisophon. But the rail network in Cambodia is in very poor condition. An extensive renovation is in process and should make the train a good option for traveling in Cambodia in the near future (the end of the renovation is scheduled for late 2013) but for it is better to take the bus. Unless traveling in a freight train is an experience that you want to try because it is an option and a fun way to travel. Ask directly at train stations or at your guesthouse if you are interested.

Cars in Cambodia

Traveling by car or motobike in Cambodia

For your trip to Cambodia, you can also rent a car or a motorcycle (between 3 and $7 for a 100 cm3 and 10 to $20 for a 250 cm3) to go around. But if on the main you can drive relatively peacefully, in the city Cambodians' habits may disturb you. Here, the red lights are rarely respected and the traffic laws are much less strict and very intuitive. Be careful, vehicles can come on the wrong circulation way even if in theory, people in Cambodia drive on the right side of the road. A motorcycle helmet is mandatory (for the driver but it is strongly recommended for all passengers). It also happens that the police stop you for no real reason just to you squeeze a few dollars. Please do not get upset ! In general, you pay one or two dollars and can go. Renting a car with driver can also be a good solution. This is quite common in Cambodia. Note that in theory, you should have an international driver's license to drive a car when you're a foreigner in Cambodia.
Motorbike rental is impossible in Siem Reap, it is prohibited. Probably to push you to hire a taxi or tuk- tuk and it is fair game.
