General information about Siem Reap

The city of Siem Reap is probably the best known of Cambodia after Phnom Penh because it is the nearest town to the most famous temples of Angkor. All visitors wishing to discover the remains of the Khmer monuments stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Siem Reap. We advice you to plan at least 3 days to visit Angkor because contrary to what some people think , there is not only one temple in Angkor but more than twenty and if the most famous is Angkor Wat which is represented on the Cambodian flag, others are equally interesting.
The city of Siem Reap itself has also a few attractions to discover. Not as interesting and visited, we must confess. Anyway there are temples with an incredibly peaceful atmosphere like Wat Bo and Wat Athvea . You can also visit the Angkor National Museum or visit the Artisans d'Angkor and see the work they do, using traditional techniques to restore the temples. There is also a large crafts and souvenirs market, bars and friendly pubs. In short, life is good in Siem Reap even if travelers do not usually take much time to see the city.

Practical information and advices

Outside Siem Reap, you will quickly find the countryside and small villages. It is possible to visit floating villages even if tours are often tourist traps where you overpaid a group boat trip and the incomes do not seem to be shared with the people who live there.
To get around you can easily find motorcycle taxis or tuk-tuks. You can hire a tuk-tuk or a taxi for the entire day to visit the Angkor temples ($25-30).
